Siena Women's Tennis capped a weekend sweep over conference opponents Rider and Mount St. Mary's to punch its ticket to its fourth consecutive—and seventh overall—MAAC Tournament playoff berth in program history on Sunday night at Tri-City Fitness, the indoor home court of the Saints, under first-year head coach
John Chiaramonte.
The Saints (5-11, 3-3 MAAC) swept all three doubles matches on Sunday for a third consecutive time against conference opponents in the past six days to give them yet another early advantage by winning the doubles point.
And, for the third consecutive time, the Saints won by the same margin of 6-1 with solid singles play that produced a pair of straight set wins from junior
Laia Giralt and freshman
Manuela Gomez and three confidence-building victories in three-set matches courtesy of seniors
Alexa Wilson and
Emma Boggiali and another from freshman
Zaara Omar.
"We've won three in a row now," said coach Chiaramonte.
"This team is match tough and ready to make a playoff run. Everyone played great today on all singles courts. Awesome for Alexa to get the clinch in a tough third-set match."
Next up, the Saints will travel to West Windsor, New Jersey to compete in the 2024 MAAC Tennis Championships at the Mercer County Tennis Park this Saturday at 10 a.m. against the winner of Monday's Quinnipiac and Fairfield match.
The winner will earn the No. 1 seed and will draw the No. 4 Saints in the Semifinals.
As for the Mountaineers (2-11, 0-5 MAAC), they will conclude their season on Monday at Marist.
In a 6-1 Saints' victory against the Broncs late on Friday night, Siena's number one doubles team of Wilson and Giralt knocked off Rider's Agnese Cessarelli and Sofia Gutierrez 6-2.
In the third position, Boggiali partnered with Omar and closed out their match first with a convincing 6-1 win against Laila Fishman and Andrea Sydow.
In the last doubles match to finish, the No. 2 team of Gomez and
Shelby Madeiros held off Samantha Killin and Daniela Naves 6-4 to complete the doubles sweep and earn the point.
In singles play, the Saints were nearly as dominant with singles victories from the number two through six spots in the lineup from Giralt, Gomez, Omar and
Jade Gautier.
"We continue to move in the right direction," coach Chiaramonte said.
"We've found a good rhythm in doubles and our singles lineup remains strong. Great match from Jade. She's looked very strong down the stretch."
The Broncs dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-4 in the MAAC.
