Reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Champion Rider broke open an early pitchers duel by scoring all 10 of their runs in innings 5-7 to take the series-opener from Siena Baseball 10-3 in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
PJ Craig held Siena (5-21, 3-1) scoreless over the first seven innings to pitch Rider (10-14, 7-0) to its eighth straight victory overall, while building upon the best MAAC start in program history. Craig finished with 7.2 solid innings overall, allowing just six hits and three runs while striking out eighth without issuing a walk.
Alistair Morin matched Craig pitch for pitch through the first four scoreless innings, but a costly fifth-inning error allowed the final two runs of a three-run frame to come in following two outs. The Broncs tacked on three more insurance runs – all of which were unearned due to another error in the sixth – before putting the game out of reach with a four-run seventh.
The Saints scored all three of their runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run homer from
Austin Rachiele.
Game Two of the three-game weekend series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
