Martinez Reps Venezuela at Davis Cup; key cog in promotion to ’25 Worlds

Returning sophomore helps home country clinch place in World Group II Playoffs for 2025 games

MAAC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Year Oscar Martinez called it an unforgettable experience in representing his home country of Venezuela at the 2024 Copa Davis Tennis Cup last week in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Selected as one of four players for Team Venezuela, Martinez took part in the World Cup of Tennis where nine teams competed in the Americas Group III from June 17-22.  Martinez was instrumental in helping Venezuela book their place at the 2025 World Group II Playoffs.  Venezuela, who finished second in Pool A, overcame Puerto Rico in a promotional playoff to ensure their spot.  Joining them will be pool winners Dominican Republic and host Paraguay.

While the La Guaira, Venezuela native will be entering his sophomore season this fall for the Saints, Martinez gained valuable international experience and paired with teammate Sebastian Pino to win each of the doubles matches that they had competed in.

Martinez and Pino defeated the Bahamas duo of Donte Armbrister and Denali Nottage 6-3, 6-1 behind the strength of winning 88 percent of first serve points (22/25).

In their other match up, Martinez and Pino stretched out for a 7-6 (12-10), 4-6, 11-9 third-set nail biter against the Paraguay doubles team of Thiago Drozdowski and Hernando Jose Escurra Isnardi.

"Oscar continues to impress us all with his high aspirations and dedication to putting in the work to improve his game," said Siena Men's Tennis assistant coach Brenden Boutin.  "He continues to build on an impressive first collegiate season. We are all excited and proud of his contributions to his national team. Whether it is Siena, or Venezuela, he represents the name on the front courageously. I can't wait to see those talents make the flight back to New York for his sophomore season."

Pool A included four teams while Pool B contained five teams with the top two teams finishing a top of each pool being promoted alongside the nation that finishes in third place.  The national finishing in the bottom of Pool B will be relegated alongside the nation that finished in eighth place.

As a freshman last year at Siena, Martinez went 18-7 in singles play and was 12-10 in doubles competition to earn All-MAAC Second Team honors for both the singles #1 and doubles #2 positions.

Siena Men's Tennis will return to action this fall.
