Siena Women's Tennis won 10 of 13 singles matches and took one of four in doubles action against host Skidmore as well as Union and RPI on day one of the Battle of the Northway on Saturday at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
Laia Giralt and Manuel Gomez each had big days for the Saints, each winning a pair of singles matches and then partnered together to win their doubles' match.
Giralt, the senior from Sant Cugat, Spain, easily won her No. 1 singles match against Union's top-seeded player Chara Meidani 8-1. Then, Giralt defeated RPI's top seeded player Nicole Ridenour 8-6.
Gomez, a sophomore from Bogota, Colombia, won her singles matches each from the No. 3 spots, taking Union's Sammy Jacobs 8-7 (6), and then topped RPI's Gauri Muliyil 8-3.
In doubles play, Giralt and Gomez teamed to topple seniors Konika Dhull and Grace Truong 8-4 of Skidmore.
The Saints return to action Sunday at 10 a.m. for the second and final day at Skidmore in the Battle of the Northway at the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center.
