TROY, NY – Siena Men's Tennis saw a mixed results day in starting up their new fall 2024 campaign against crosstown RPI in the Siena Saints Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman
Emilio Zavala Salinas won his singles debut match by defeating Luis of RPI 7-5, 6-4.
Siena had a stronger showing on the doubles side, winning three of four matches.
The sophomore duo of
Oscar Martinez and
Dylan Breen picked up a 6-3 victory against Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu.
Newcomer and freshman
Bruno Loch Varella joined his older brother Fabio, who joined the team last season, and the pair had a successful first trip out together as Saints doubles partners by defeating the pair of Tsubi Okada and Joel McCandless 7-6 (5).
Max Acri and Zavela Salinas teamed up to reel another doubles win for the Saints, handling Luis and Yemula 6-2.
The Engineers, who finished a stout 17-2 last season in winning the Liberty League Tournament, were NCAA qualifiers a season ago.
Several Saints gave the Engineers a push in their singles match ups.
Zino Varahous-Poole and newcomer
Bruno Loch Varella each extended their singles matches by winning a set against the RPI's Andy Zhu and Tasmay Shah, respectively.
Tomas Andreotti also made his debut for the Saints and pushed Joel McCandless deep before a 7-6 (9), 6-3 defeat.
The Saints resume play in the Siena Invitational Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. in Troy at Sharp Courts facing RPI.
