Siena Men's Tennis returned to competition after a two-and a half month break on the road at Saint Francis (PA) and earned a pair of singles wins at the Edensburg Tennis Center on Friday morning in Loretto, PA.
Sophomore
Oscar Martinez picked up his 13
th singles victory of the 2024-2025 campaign, playing from his usual No. 1 spot.
The La Guaira, Venezuelan and product of Romulo Gallego rallied back after dropping the opening set 1-6 to sophomore Tyler Nguyen to take the next two sets by the scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
The match up was a showdown between each conference's Rookie of the Year representative from a year ago with Martinez capturing the MAAC's award while Nguyen was the choice for the NEC as well as First Team Conference selection.
Playing from the No. 5 position, freshman Bruno Varella improved to 7-3 in singles competition by earning a straight sets victory against senior Kevin Kruzel 6-0, 6-2.
The win is a solid step forward for Varella.
Kruzel finished last season as a 10-game winner and was a two-time NEC Prime Performer last October as well as in March.
The Saints will have a quick turnaround and play tomorrow in its 2025 home opener hosting LIU at 2 p.m. from Tri-City Fitness in Latham.
