LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Basketball freshman
Gavin Doty has been proclaimed the Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week. The Fulton, New York product broke out to nearly average a double-double over three games last week to bridge the New Year.
Doty becomes the first Siena freshman to earn MAAC Rookie of the Week honors in nearly two years, dating back to
Michael Eley on Feb. 27, 2023. Doty averaged 14.7 points and 9.3 rebounds while leading the Saints to a pair of victories last week, and came up clutch down the stretch in all three contests.
On Monday, Doty scored 16 points on 5-8 shooting while adding eight rebounds in a road victory over perennial Ivy League power Cornell. The freshman was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line in the final 13 seconds to seal the six-point win.
On Friday, Doty registered his first collegiate double-double with 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds vs. Manhattan. He scored 14 of his 19 points during the extra sessions of the double overtime win. Doty hit the go-ahead three down the stretch of the second overtime, and then added a second dagger triple on the next Siena possession.
Doty capped the week by finishing just a point and a rebound shy of a second straight double-double with nine points and nine rebounds vs. Iona on Sunday. He gave the Saints late life, registering three straight steals in a 12-second span in the final minute, and converted a three-point play to pull Siena within a point with 27.7 seconds to go.
Doty is averaging 6.2 points and 3.6 rebounds spanning 17.5 minutes while having appeared in all 15 games off the bench so far this season. He's scored in double figures three times to date, highlighted by a season-high 21-point performance vs. Jacksonville on Nov. 26.
Doty and the Saints return to action when they travel to defending MAAC Regular Season Champion and preseason favorite Quinnipiac Friday night at 7 p.m. in Hamden, Connecticut.
