Siena (3-2) is in search of its first 4-2 non-conference start in a decade (2015-16 season), as they look to build momentum after reclaiming the Albany Cup Friday night at MVP Arena. The Saints have been getting it done both on the glass and at the charity stripe early on.
Siena has out-rebounded each of its first five opponents – a feat accomplished just nine times all of last season – while leading the MAAC in rebound margin (+5.4) and ranking second in offensive rebounding (14.0). Newcomer
Tasman Goodrick has fueled the early rebounding success, ranking 17
th nationally in offensive rebounding (4.2), while also pacing the MAAC in overall rebounding (9.4).
At the free throw line, the Saints stand 37
th nationally, connecting at a .779 clip. Four starters rank within the top-11 in the MAAC in free throw percentage, all shooting .833 or better. Siena has made 32 more free throws than its opponents – an average of +6.4 per game – thanks in part to ranking 10
th nationally in fewest fouls committed (13.6). The Saints are shooting .815 at the charity stripe over their past 11 games dating back to last season.
Holy Cross (1-5) makes its long-awaited home debut following four true road games plus a neutral contest, including three matchups at high-major opponents and a pair of games in the State of Utah. The Crusaders will now play their next three games – and seven of the next nine – at Hart Center Arena.
Holy Cross was predicted to finish ninth (10 teams) according to the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Crusaders finished 13-19 overall a year ago, including 5-13 in the Patriot League.
Siena and Holy Cross meet for the 21
st time overall and ninth time in the past nine seasons in non-conference action. The Saints lead the all-time series 13-7 – and had won four straight while going a perfect 9-0 at home – prior to the Crusaders 78-70 victory last Dec. 20 in Albany.
