Marist Hands Saints Another Heartbreaking Defeat

Siena Suffers Third One-Point League Loss

ALBANY, NY – Elijah Lewis made the game-winning three with 20.4 seconds remaining as Marist rallied from 14 down to hand Siena Basketball a heartbreaking 65-64 setback at MVP Arena.

Lewis scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half for Marist (17-5, 10-3) which rebounded from its first back-to-back losses all season. Josh Pascarelli added all 12 of his points in the second half for the Red Foxes which secured the program's 800th all-time win.

Gavin Doty scored a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds for Siena (11-14, 6-8) which has dropped all seven of its MAAC contests decided by two possessions or less. Major Freeman and Justice Shoats tallied 16 points apiece for the Saints which suffered their third one-point league loss this season.

Siena got out of the gates hot, generating a 24-6 run eclipsing nine minutes to open as much as a 14-point edge at 29-15 at the 6:07 mark. The Saints led 37-24 at the break following a strong all-around opening stanza.

Marist responded with a 12-1 run over the first 2:32 of the second half to quickly rally within a pair. Siena answered with the ensuing seven points to push the lead back to nine, but the Red Foxes hung around.

Jadin Collins-Roberts capped a 12-5 Marist spurt down the stretch to draw the Red Foxes even for the first time since early in the first half at 62-all with 62 ticks to go. Doty put the Saints back in front on the ensuing possession, but Lewis answered with the decisive right wing three.

After missing a chance to quickly reclaim the lead on their next possession, the trademark late-game Siena defense awarded the Saints an extra opportunity late. Back-to-back tie-ups gave Siena the ball, but another chance for the lead was off the mark in the waning seconds. Following a missed front-end of a one-and-one, the Saints did get a desperation heave off from three-quarters court, however the bank attempt wouldn't stay down.

Siena shot just 24% (6-25) in the second half including only 1-10 from three to fall in the program's 700th all-time MAAC contest.

The Saints committed a season-low three turnovers, but only dished out four assists. Siena was just 4-17 from three and, despite attempting 35 free throws, misfired on 13 of their attempts from the line.

The Saints will look to bounce back when they hit the road to wrap up the regular season series with Sacred Heart Sunday at noon in Fairfield, Connecticut.
