Long matches always seem to feel a whole lot better when you come away with the win.
That was exactly how the Siena Men's Tennis team felt after taking five singles matches the distance with third-set tiebreakers before picking up the rallying road victory over Le Moyne 4-3 in Liverpool at Elevate Fitness.
"We battled hard for five and a half hours at all six singles spots," said Siena first-year head coach
Alex Van Cott.
"The guys really played with a chip on their shoulder from start to finish. Great job by Breen getting his first win of the season in a tense situation. We will continue to build on this performance, and continue to embrace adversity head on."
It was the back end of the Saints' singles lineup that delivered, each winning in the third set, including No. 3
Bruno Loch Varella, No. 4
Maxwell Acri, No. 5
Dylan Breen and No. 6
Emilio Zavala Salinas.
Acri and Loch Varella switched spots in the lineup from the last time out with B. Varella dropping the opening set against Adrian Daniel 4-6 before clawing back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3.
Acri took the first set into a tie-breaker and won 7-6 (9) and played more sound in the second set for a 6-3 clincher versus Callum Mathew.
Breen lost the middle set against Luke Hoyland and responded with a 7-5 win in the deciding set.
Zavala Salinas split the first two sets against Navya Verma before holding him off for a 6-3 win in the last set.
The Saints moved to 1-6 on the year.
The Dolphins dropped to 4-4 on the season.
Next, Siena will play at Brown (9-5) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
