The Saints extended their season-long winning streak to six games with a 72-58 win over Canisius on Saturday, and, in doing so, completed a road sweep over their Western New York foes for the first time in eight seasons. Now with a win over the Mount Saturday, Siena can secure a top-three seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament.
Siena's win over Canisius featured a career-high 14 points from freshman
Aniya Hooker, who reached double figures for the third time this season, and the first time since Dec. 1 against UMass. Hooker was clutch down the stretch for Siena, scoring 12 of her 14 in the second half including 10 in the fourth quarter.
Also in the game,
Teresa Seppala extended her national-leading free throw percentage to 94.8 after going 3-3 from the line, while also reaching double figures in scoring for a 12th consecutive game. Her 17.6 PPG mark is the highest single-season total the program has had since the 2020-21 season, while her 42.0% shooting from three currently stands as the second-highest single-season mark in program history.
Ahniysha Jackson's record-setting 206th career made three-pointer is well within reach, as the graduate student is four away from becoming the all-time program leader. Fresh off a 23-point outing at Canisius on Saturday that also saw her come down with a season-high eight boards, Jackson has hit four or more threes in a game on three occasions this season - as well as 13 times total over her 113-game career.
Having lost two out of their last three games, the Mountaineers sit 13-13 overall, and fourth place in the MAAC at 11-6. One of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the conference, the Mount attempts the second-most shots from beyond the arc per game in the league - 8.2 - while the team's 35.0% clip from three also ranks second. The Mountaineers boast three of the MAAC's top-10 shooters from deep in Anna LeMaster (2nd, 41.0%), Jo Raflo (7th, 37.9%), and Gabrielle Kennerly (10th, 35.6%). Additionally, Raflo sits fifth in the conference dropping 15.7 points per outing, while LeMaster provides 12.8 per game (12th), and Kennerly 11.0 (16th).
Saturday marks the eighth all-time meeting between the Mount and Siena, with the Mountaineers holding a slight 4-3 edge in the young series history. The Saints are 1-1 all-time in games played against the Mount in Loudonville, with a 77-75 overtime loss on Feb. 4, 2023, and a 65-56 victory on Mar. 2, 2024. The Mountaineers got the better of the Saints earlier this season in a 92-57 victory in Emmitsburg, MD. In that meeting, the Mount shot 52% from beyond the arc (13-25) - its highest single-game mark this season - and 52.6% overall from the field (30-57).
The last time Siena hosted the Mount in its 65-56 win nearly one year to the day of Saturday's game, the Saints out-scored the Mountaineers 18-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the team's 13th league win of the season. Seppala went off for a 23-point, 16-rebound double-double, with her rebound total serving as a career-high.
Following the Mount, Siena travels to take on Fairfield at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 6 for a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
