Mount St. Mary’s Powers Past Saints

Mount Shoots 57%, Scores 48 in Paint

EMMITSBURG, MD – Mount St. Mary's shot 57% from the field and held a commanding 48-22 advantage in points in the paint to defeat Siena Basketball 85-79 at Knott Arena.
 
Dola Adebayo led five in double figures with 22 points on 9-12 shooting and 13 rebounds for Mount St. Mary's (18-11, 11-7), which has won seven of nine. Dallas Hobbs added 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists for Mount which held a 39-27 rebounding advantage.
 
Two-time defending MAAC Rookie of the Week Gavin Doty scored 20 points and added seven rebounds and four assists for Siena (13-16, 8-10), which has now dropped 14 straight in the month of March. Brendan Coyle posted his sixth game with five or more threes in adding 20 points for the Saints, who fell to 0-9 in MAAC games decided by one or two possessions.
 
Siena led for more than 17 minutes in the first half, but Mount scored the final seven of the stanza to take a 37-35 lead at the break.
 
Mount ultimately bridged the halves with 16 unanswered – holding the Saints scoreless for 6:20 – and soon thereafter built their lead to as much as a dozen at 50-38 with 14:57 remaining.
 
Siena, as they have all year long, battled back and used a 13-5 spurt to rally back within a possession at 74-72 with 3:07 to go. But Mount, which shot 62% in the second half and dished out 14 assists in the stanza, responded with the ensuing seven points down the stretch to seal it.
 
Jedy Cordelia and Carmelo Pacheco chipped in 15 points apiece for Mount, while reserve Javon Ervin rounded out their double figure scorers with 10.  
 
Major Freeman contributed 15 points and swiped his 100th collegiate steal for the Saints which shot a solid 13-34 (38%) from distance, but just 13-35 (37%) inside the arc. Justice Shoats tallied 10 points and five assists.
 
Siena returns to the Capital Region for its final home game of the season when they host Fairfield on Senior Night Thursday at 7 p.m. at MVP Arena. The team will honor senior players Luke Cecchi and Myles Wilmoth and manager Anderson Jones in a pregame ceremony shortly before tip-off.
