Aidan Paradine provided insurance with a two-run double of his own, as Siena Baseball defeated four-time defending MAAC Regular Season Champion and preseason favorite Fairfield 4-2 in extra innings in the series-opener in Connecticut.
Alistair Morin combined with three relievers to scatter just six hits and only one earned run in a clutch performance from a Siena (4-14, 2-2) pitching staff which bore down when it mattered most. The four Saints hurlers combined to hold Fairfield (12-7, 3-1) to just 1-24 hitting with runners on – including only 1-16 with runners in scoring position – to strand 18 Stags on the base paths.
MarkAnthony Glickman pitched a yeomanlike three innings out of the bullpen to earn the win while
Sebastian Bentz picked up his second save for Siena, which snapped a 10-game losing streak against the perennial MAAC powers, albeit with all games having been played in Connecticut. The Saints earned their first win over Fairfield since May 2, 2021 when they snapped the then 23
rd ranked Stags 28-game win streak.
Reigning MAAC Pitcher of the Week Ben Alekson went seven strong, allowing just six hits and one earned run with one walk and seven strikeouts for Fairfield, which has dropped three straight after having entered the week on a nine-game win streak.
Jake Sparks extended his hitting streak to 15 straight with a first inning RBI single to stake Siena to the early advantage.
Sean Camacho and
Nick Bergamotto each added a pair of hits apiece to pace the Saints offensively.
Noah Lussier was the lone hitter with multiple knocks for the Stags, which tied things up on a botched sacrifice attempt in the eighth.
Morin went 5.1 shutout innings while striking out six in a solid performance for the Saints, who cut down a Fairfield squad which had entered play 90-15 (.857) in conference action dating back to the start of their championship run.
Siena will seek to put a stranglehold on the series with the teams reconvene for the middle game Saturday at 1 p.m.
