Fairfield finished with six unanswered runs – highlighted by a decisive five-run fifth – to rally past Siena Baseball 7-2 and even the weekend series in Connecticut.
TJ Schmalzle delivered the go-ahead two run double for Fairfield (13-7, 4-1) in the fifth, in an inning which was capped by a two-run homer from Luke Nomura. Schmalzle also homered for the Stags.
Siena (4-15, 2-3) built a 2-1 lead at the midway point, drawing even on a
Jake Sparks solo shot in the fourth before pulling ahead on an RBI groundout from
Gavin Thorburn in the fifth. Sparks extended his hitting streak to 16 straight with the home run.
Sean Camacho and
Jeremy Sangalang each posted multi-hit efforts for the Saints, who managed just two baserunners after Fairfield took the lead for good in the fifth.
Bowen Baker went six strong, scattering four hits and two earned runs while walking just one and striking out six to earn the win for the Stags.
The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
