LOUDONVILLE, NY – Alistair Morin,
Tyler Sausville, and
Noah Rodriguez combined to allow just three total runs over 18 stellar innings of work to pitch Siena Baseball to a series-opening doubleheader sweep of defending MAAC Tournament Champion Niagara at Connors Park. The Saints prevailed in a pair of one-run affairs, taking the opener 3-2 and the nightcap 2-1.
Game 1: Siena 3, Niagara 2
Aidan Paradine provided the decisive offensive blow of a pitchers' duel with the go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning as Siena (11-20, 7-7) secured the series-opener.
Each team scratched across a run in the first, with Niagara (8-20, 4-10) going in front 2-1 on a wild pitch in the third.
A hit batsman in the sixth set the table for Paradine who provided the deciding blast. The Saints made the most of their six total base runners in the opener, scoring half of them.
Morin and Sausville did the rest. After Morin went the first five strong with seven strikeouts, Sausville piggybacked with arguably his best performance yet in a Siena uniform. The southpaw tossed four scoreless with four strikeouts to earn his first victory with the Saints.
Matthew DelVecchio went 7.2 allowing four hits and three runs without issuing a walk while striking out five to take the tough-luck loss for the Purple Eagles.
Game 2: Siena 2, Niagara 1
Siena made single runs in each of the first two innings stand up as the surging Saints won for the fifth time in six games since the start of last week.
Siena scratched across its first run on an error in the opening frame, while
Jeremy Sangalang doubled the score with a run-scoring two-bagger in the second.
The early support turned out to be enough for Rodriguez who twirled a masterpiece. The senior went the distance, registering his first career complete game effort, scattering just four hits and one run while walking a pair and striking out a career-high eight.
Siena will now look to secure its first weekend sweep of the season when the series concludes Sunday at noon.
