Siena Men's Tennis dropped a nailbiter at Rider 4-3 on Tuesday morning at the Campus Tennis Courts in Lawrenceville, NJ.
Siena (5-12 overall, 4-3 MAAC) took the early advantage by winning the doubles point on the strength of two pairings.
Emilio Zavala Salinas and
Oscar Martinez as well as the team of
Maxwell Acri and
Bruno Loch Varella each notched victories to clinch doubles.
Zavala Salinas and Martinez got past Dhruv Tangri and Matteus Froberg Dahlin 7-5 at the No. 1 position while Acri and B. Loch Varella defeated Axel Engstrom and Cooper Dillon 6-4 from the No. 3 spot.
Dylan Breen and
Fabio Loch Varella led Roger Martinez and Cole Thurgur 6-5, but were left unfinished.
In singles play, the Saints picked up additional victories from Martinez and Zavala Salinas at the No. 1 and No. 6 positions.
Martinez earned his team-leading 22
nd singles win by beating Froberg Dahlin 6-1, 6-2.
Zavala Salinas defeated Mathew Griscti in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 to earn his 15
th singles win in his freshman campaign.
With the team locked at 3-3, Engstrom won a marathon match with Breen 6-7 (10), 7-6 (8), 6-4 to secure the victory for Rider.
The Broncs improved to 9-12 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC.
Both teams have clinched playoff berths.
The top six teams qualify for the MAAC Tennis Championships from April 25-27 at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, NJ.
