It was a match up that Siena Women's Tennis has historically dominated.
That trend continued on Friday in the MAAC Women's Tennis First Round as the fifth-seeded Saints defeated No. 4 Rider 4-1 on Friday to advance to its 10
th consecutive MAAC Semifinal at Mercer County Tennis Park in West Windsor, NJ.
Next up, the Saints (8-10, 5-3 MAAC) will take on No. 1 Quinnipiac (10-8, 8-0 MAAC) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Siena got a pair of wins from
Laia Giralt and
Manuela Gomez while
Andrea Vargas and
Madeline De Faber-Schumacher each won their singles match ups as the Saints improved to 26-1 in the all-time series versus the Broncs including 21 straight victories dating back to April of 2005.
Zaara Omar, who outlasted Claire Brown 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in a back-and-forth tussle just 10 days earlier to pick up the clinching victory in a 4-3 team win, was matched up with Daniela Anzaldo Naves this time around and trailed 6-4, 5-4.
The rest of her teammates ended it earlier so that match did not finish.
Giralt and Gomez paired to win the doubles #1 match against the duo of Naves and Brown 6-1. From the No. 2 spot, it was Vargas and Omar who clinched the doubles point for Siena with a 6-1 win against Chloe Monachelli and Maria Buss.
In singles competition, Giralt earned her 55
th career victory by topping Laila Fishman 6-0, 6-2 to finish the quickest among all singles matches.
Gomez went deeper into her match before pulling out a 6-4, 7-5 win against Brown at the No. 3 spot.
And, De Faber-Schumacher got the clincher in a third set 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 rally to wrap it for Siena.
It was the junior's team-leading 17
th singles win of the season and 12
th coming from the No. 6 spot.
