The No. 2 seeded Siena Men's Tennis team came up just short in their MAAC Semifinal against sixth-seeded Rider on Saturday at Mercer County Tennis Park in West Windsor, NJ.
Siena (6-13) had a reversal of fortunes, dropping the doubles point after winning it in their match against the Broncs just 11 days earlier.
Maxwell Acri and
Bruno Loch Varella earned a 6-2 win against Cooper Dillon and Axel Engstrom at the No. 3 spot, but the Saints dropped the first two matches to fall behind 0-1.
Oscar Martinez and
Emilio Zavala Salinas were stopped by Dhruv Tangri and Matteus Dahlin Froberg 6-2 while
Dylan Breen and Fabio Varella fell to Roger Martinez and Cole Thurgur 6-1.
The Saints made it dramatic, however, as Martinez earned his team-leading 24th singles victory of the season by beating Tangri in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.
Zavala Salinas gave Siena a 2-1 advantage when he topped Giacomo Ghitti 6-3, 6-2.
Rider stormed back to even it at 2-2 when Engstrom defeated Breen 6-3, 6-1.
The Broncs (11-13) got closer when Froberg bested
Fabio Loch Varella by the scores of 6-3, 6-1.
That left
Bruno Loch Varella in a big spot, earning a gutsy 7-5, 6-4 win against Nathan Slattery to pull even at 3-3.
Acri won the opening set at the No. 3 position, but he fell going the distance 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-2 against Thurgur to wrap it.
