Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Saints (Sacred) Heart a Victory

Dobrzynski becomes all-time leading scorer; Wamp, Irish each total a pair of goals

Sophomore Olivia Nicholson fired high for the winning goal off a pass from redshirt freshman Koehler Nieman with 2:30 remaining as Siena Women's Lacrosse rallied for a 7-6 conference road victory at Campus Field in Fairfield, CT, on Saturday afternoon.

Siena (4-8, 2-2 MAAC) were in a seesaw affair, taking an early lead and then fell behind heading into halftime before the stirring finish.

Along the way, Grace Dobrzynski, the West Greenwich, RI native, become the program's all-time leading points scorer on a free position goal in the third quarter, reaching 228 career points. The senior attack is also the program's all-time leader in assists.

It was a gritty effort by the Saints, who refused to give in and outscored the Pioneers 4-1 in the second half. After the teams battled to a 5-5 tie in draw controls in the first half, it was nearly a perfect second half for Siena as the Saints won six of seven draw controls for the remainder of the game.

Cassidy Bonura made the biggest wave in that department, leading the team with six, while Mikayla Cooke contributed with three while Sydney Hannes and Lauren O'Hagan each had one.

In the early stages of the game, sophomore Elizabeth Wamp got the Saints off to a running start, scoring the first two goals within the opening 2:36 of the game with the second goal coming off a feed from Dobrzynski.

Sacred Heart (4-7 overall, 2-2 MAAC) responded with five of the game's next six goals highlighted by the performance of Shae Insinga, who scored twice towards the middle part of the second quarter.

Siena trailed 5-3 at halftime, but were able to get it tied at 5-5 at the end of three after Dobrzynski scored on her free position shot and Sarah Irish added another goal for her second of the day.

Nieman closed the final quarter strong as the Canandaigua, NY native put Siena ahead 6-5 with 8:24 remaining in the game off a feed from Kelly Logue

On defense, Siena got a strong backing from freshman McAllister Salter, who earned credit for her second win in as many games as the starting goalkeeper and the Saints climbed back into the thick of the MAAC playoff hunt. Canisius and Marist are also 2-2 in conference play in a four-way tie for the fifth spot in the standings.

The Pioneers' Jamie Tanner knotted it back up at 6-6 with 5:56 left, but Nieman found Nicholson on a woman-up advantage to conclude the scoring and give Siena just enough for the win.

Siena will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Marist (3-10, 2-2 MAAC) at 3 p.m. from Hickey Field.
