Stony Brook plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off Siena Baseball 12-11 in a wild midweek matchup on Long Island.
Each of the first five Stony Brook (5-16) batters reached base safely in the final frame, and Johnny Pilla scored on a wild pitch for the decisive run. The Seawolves were the beneficiaries of a pair of hit batsmen and a walk in the ninth, with a game-tying two-run single by pinch-hitter Like Ciminiello sandwiched in between.
Siena (7-14) had led throughout, highlighted by a six-run first inning. The Saints scored all six of their runs with two outs, with leadoff hitter
Matt Thorsen singling twice in the frame, the second of which brought home a pair of runs.
But Stony Brook responded with four in the home half of the first in what turned out to be a wild three-hour, 45-minute affair. Siena still led 11-7 following a three-run seventh, but the Seawolves scored a pair in the bottom half to kickstart a run of five unanswered to end the game.
Thorsen added three walks and a pair of steals in a stat-stuffing performance atop the Saints order, while three additional Siena batters added multi-hit performances.
Steven Ramirez knocked in a team-high three runs out of the No. 8 spot in the order.
Mike Vilani and Pilla each scored three times to pace Stony Brook.
Matt Murtagh settled things down early for the Saints out of the bullpen with five strong innings of relief, scattering four hits and two runs (one earned).
Siena will look to bounce back this weekend with a return to MAAC action against I-87 rival Marist. The three-game series commences Friday at 3 p.m. in Wappingers Falls, New York.
