Walk Off Déjà vu; Siena Baseball Takes Series Versus Fairfield

Saints’ Sparks Draws Walk for Second Consecutive Walk-off Win

TROY, NY – For the second consecutive day, Jake Sparks and Siena Baseball had the comeback answer and walked off Fairfield again—this time 7-6 in the middle game of the series—that picked up in the top of the eighth inning after last night's game was suspended to Saturday due to darkness at Robison Field on the campus of RPI.

Trailing 6-3, Siena inched closer when Aidan Paradine launched a solo home run to deep left field in the bottom half of the eighth inning.

After Saints' pitcher JT Gunzy worked out of a jam (allowed one hit and an error was committed in the field) against the Stags in the top of the ninth, Siena set the table and secured a dramatic victory with a three-run rally in the ninth inning, overcoming Fairfield's lead.

Matt Thorsen began the decisive frame with a single, later advancing to third on a wild pitch. Sean Camacho's double drove in Thorsen, closing the gap.

Gavin Thorburn followed with a single, bringing in Edwin Sanchez and narrowing the margin further.

A bases-loaded walk earned by Jake Sparks plated the winning run, clinching the game for the Saints.

Siena's offense was highlighted by 14 hits, including two home runs with another off the bat of Sparks in the fifth inning.

Fairfield had taken control in the fifth inning, scoring twice with the help of an error. However, Siena's resilience and timely hitting turned the tide, culminating in a thrilling final inning that showcased their ability to seize crucial opportunities.

Paradine made a strong impact with three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Sparks contributed significantly, recording two hits and two RBIs, along with a home run. Scott Lynch collected three hits, one of which was a double, while also reaching base with a walk. Thorsen showcased his speed, successfully stealing two bases and adding a hit and an RBI to his performance.

Luke Nomura stood out with a strong performance, recording three hits in six at-bats and scoring one run. Matt Bucciero also had an impressive outing, matching Nomura with three hits and contributing two RBIs, including a double. Connor Scanlan showed his speed and presence on the bases, scoring twice and stealing a base, while demonstrating solid defense at first base with six putouts and two assists.

Gunzy delivered a strong performance, pitching two innings with no runs allowed, one hit, and two strikeouts, earning the win. David Siciliano started for the Saints, contributing four innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. George Handal also provided effective relief with two and a 1/3 innings, one run on two hits, and four strikeouts.

For Fairfield, Alex Frank had a scoreless outing over three innings, giving up two hits and three walks while striking out three. Hunter Hoxie started for the Stags, pitching two and a 1/3 innings with two earned runs on four hits and three walks. Will Youngman struggled in his one-inning appearance, allowing four earned runs, including a home run and a double.

In the series finale, Fairfield (2-9, 1-2 MAAC) responded back with a convincing 12-3 win over the Saints (5-8, 2-1 MAAC).

Fairfield took control in the sixth inning. A single by Zach Stephenson drove in Payten Wawruck, followed by TJ Schmalzle's RBI single and a three-run homer from Luke Nomura, which extended the lead to six runs.

Siena had earlier tied the game in the third inning with a productive sequence. Gavin Thorburn doubled, advancing Sean Camacho to third, and Vincent Venditti's single allowed Camacho to score. Nick Bergamotto's RBI single, followed by a wild pitch, brought in two more runs, temporarily giving the Saints the lead. However, Siena struggled to maintain momentum, leaving potential runs on base in later innings.

In the eighth inning, the Saints had another chance to close the gap when Thorburn and Venditti reached base with no outs, but failed to convert as Fairfield's defense held firm, leaving two runners stranded.

Venditti recorded two hits and one RBI. Thorsen was effective in the field, finishing with six assists. Thorburn added a double and scored once. Ryan Taffe pitched three innings, striking out four batters while allowing no hits.

Nomura made a significant impact with four RBIs and a home run in his game at shortstop. Schmalzle also delivered a strong performance, contributing three RBIs and scoring two runs from the center field. Stephenson's appearance in left field included driving in two RBIs and scoring a run. On the mound, Brandon Miller pitched seven innings, earning a win while striking out five batters and allowing three earned runs.

Ryan Taffe pitched three innings for the Saints, allowing two runs including one earned, on no hits while striking out four and walking four. Richie Paltridge, who was tagged with the loss, pitched two and a 1/3 innings, surrendering five earned runs on four hits and two walks, striking out two.
