Siena Baseball secured a pivotal series victory with a 10-2 triumph over Sacred Heart in the decisive rubber game in Connecticut.
The Siena (15-24, 8-13) offense continued its recent outburst by pounding out 14 hits – albeit 13 of which were singles – while scoring in double figures for the sixth time in the past seven games to help keep their postseason hopes alive. The Saints finish the weekend three games back of the sixth and final MAAC Tournament spot with nine games remaining.
Noah Brooks and
Jake Sparks produced back-to-back two-out RBI singles to stake Siena to an early 2-0 first inning lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Saints extended their lead to 4-0 through four, and incrementally added to their advantage thereafter before putting a stamp on things with a three-run ninth punctuated by a two-run single from
Aidan Paradine.
Nick Bergamotto wrapped up a stellar 10-hit performance spanning a 3-1 week with a 4-5 effort out of the leadoff spot with three runs scored. Meanwhile,
Jake Sparks capped a nine RBI weekend with three more runs batted in to go along with three hits.
Gavin Thorburn added a pair of hits and scored four times out of the nine-hole.
The offensive output was more than enough for a trio of Siena hurlers which combined on a two-hitter.
Gio Conte won his second start of the week, allowing just a pair of hits and one run while walking two and striking out four.
The Saints begin a busy five-game week – four of which will be played within the friendly confines of Connors Park – when they host UMass in non-conference action Tuesday at 3 p.m.
