LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sarah Shumway tallied a goal and an assist in the final six minutes to lift Siena past Marist 2-0 in a driving rainstorm Wednesday afternoon. The win upped the Saints record to 10-6 and 6-3 in the MAAC. The Saints clinched at least a fourth-place finish heading into the conference tournament, their best finish since 1997. The regular-season champion Red Foxes fell to 8-8 and 8-1 in the MAAC.
The two teams struggled to generate offense in the rainy conditions, managing just six shots apiece. Siena broke through with just over six minutes left when Shumway (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) crossed the ball into the box. It was tapped on by Lindsay McSharry (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth N. Central) to Nicole Orlandella (Peabody, Mass./Champlain College) who buried it past Marist goalie Mellanie Nai.
The Saints tacked on a final score when Shumway scored with 13 seconds left off a feed from Erin Hutnick (Herndon, VA/Paul VI). Nai made two saves for the Red Foxes.
Siena goalie Noel Cox (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) recorded her seventh shutout by making three saves. She lowered her goals against average to 0.96, second-best in the MAAC.
The Green and Gold close the regular season at Binghamton Sunday. Siena opens play in the MAAC Tournament at the Disney World Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. on Thursday, November 1st.
