Steve Karbowski Named MAAC Coach of the Year

Nov. 2, 2001

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - After leading his team to a six-win improvement in 2001, head coach Steve Karbowski was named the MAAC Co-Coach of the Year. Karbowski shared the honor with Marist's Megan McGonagle. Sophomore Erin Beam was named First-Team All-MAAC and freshman goalkeeper Noel Cox was named to the Second-Team.

Karbowski, along with assistant coaches Danielle Hummel and Andrew Sether, led the team to a 10-8 overall record including 6-3 in the MAAC, the team's best showing since 1997. Karbowski, a 1992 graduate of Siena, was able to engineer the turnaround with a young roster that features just one senior among the Saints' 26 players.

Beam (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink) was named to the First-Team. The sophomore finished among the top 10 scorers in the league in the regular season with four goals and six assists.

Cox (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) was selected to the Second-Team All-MAAC, as well as the All-Rookie team. The freshman netminder finished in the top three in the conference in goals against average (0.96), save percentage (.844) and winning percentage (9-7).

Joining Cox on the All-Rookie team were fellow freshmen Erin DeMatteo and Jen Kies. DeMatteo (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga) scored three goals and added two assists to rank among the conference leaders in freshmen scoring. Kies (South Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was a standout on the defensive end, playing in 17 games and starting 15 in her rookie season.

The Saints season ended with a 1-0 loss to Manhattan Thursday in the MAAC Tournament quarterfinals in Orlando, Fla.
