Loudonville, N.Y. - Sophomore Sarah Estes' (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) three goals were not enough to lead the Saints past the visiting Niagara Purple Eagles who ran away with a 13-3 win at Siena Field in MAAC lacrosse action.
Niagara built an early lead in the first half behind a pair of goals by Megan McNerney's that gave the Purple Eagles a 4-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Saints first got on the scoreboard when Sara Estes found the back of the net with 18:40 remaining in the first half. Estes tallied her second goal of the game later in the half as the Saints trailed 8-2 at the intermission.
Siena's defense picked up it's intensity in the second half holding Niagara scoreless over a 14 minute stretch midway through the period. Sophomore Lindsay Anderson (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) played a major role on the Saints back line, recording five takeaway checks. Niagara broke their scoring drought with ten minutes remaining in the game as Laurie Haefner netted back-to-back goals to extend the Purple Eagles lead to 12-2. Sara Estes would later score her third goal of the game with 8:28 remaining in the contest.
Freshman goalie Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) had a busy day between the pipes, recording 20 saves while facing 45 shots by the Purple Eagles.
Siena will close out their home schedule tomorrow as they host Canisius at 3:00 p.m.
