EASTON, Pa. - Freshman Kati Kochersperger connected for the game-winning goal 9:41 into the overtime session to cap a Lafayette comeback from a two-goal deficit in women's soccer action on Wednesday. The 3-2 win over Siena was Lafayette's eighth of the season (8-4).
Lafayette fired off seven shots in the opening period, but saw several legitimate scoring chances go by the wayside. Siena fired off just two shots in the first half, with the first shot resulting in a Siena goal when Allyson Spencer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) tapped in a loose ball in the box at 9:13.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, Siena took what seemed to be a commanding 2-0 lead at 70:53. Siena's Michelle Fraser (Medford, Mass./Arlington Catholic) tapped in a crossing pass from Jill Lanzl (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire). The shot eluded Lafayette keeper Ashley Wesmiller who was pulled out of position.
Down 2-0, Lafayette began to mount its comeback. At 79:02 sophomore Emily Myers fired off a shot to the top left of the goal only to have a Siena defender put her hand up and stop the shot. The referee issued the defender a yellow card and Myers was awarded a penalty kick which she converted to make it 2-1.
With just over five minutes left in the game (84:21), sophomore midfielder Sarah Harting took a Kochersperger cross from the left and blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the goal to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was Harting's second of the season.
The game went into the first of two scheduled sudden death overtime periods, but Kochersperger ended the suspense when she connected for a one-timer off a cross from freshman Kerrie Kiley. The score was Kochersperger's second game-winning goal of the season.
For the game, Lafayette outshot Siena 20-6, with 11 of Lafayette's shots coming on goal. Wesmiller got the win in goal for Lafayette, surrendering two goals in 99 minutes. She finished with two saves. Lisa Micelli (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) allowed all three goals and recorded eight saves in goal for Siena (3-6-2).
The Saints will next be in action at Canisius on October 6 at 7:30 p.m.
