Loudonville, N.Y. -Sophomore Sarah Estes (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) second three-goal game in two days could not overtake the Canisius Golden Griffins' strong first half that led to their 9-7 victory over the Saints in MAAC lacrosse action at Siena Field.
Estes got the Saints on the scoreboard early in the game when she netted her first of three goals on the day with 23:13 remaining in the first half. Canisius stormed back with five unanswered goals to jump out to a 5-1 lead midway through the first half. The Golden Griffins' Lisa Barbasch netted two of the goals over that stretch while assisting on one other. The Saints' Estes would answer back with her second goal of the game after the two teams battled through 10 minutes of scoreless action.
In the second half, the Saints stormed out of the gate on goals by Cynthia Gutierrez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and Julie Mason (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) to cut the Griffs lead to 6-4. After the Griffs tacked on one more goal, Siena's Estes would tally her third goal of the game as Siena trailed 7-5. Siena's Stephanie Petruccelli (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) got the Saints back in the game with back-to-back goals to tie the game up at seven with 4:44 remaining in the contest. The Griffs' Rebecca Scanlon quickly responded 17 seconds later to put Canisius back on top with her first of two goals in the game. Scanlon would tack on an insurance goal with 2:45 left in the game to put Canisius up for good 9-7.
Canisius goalie Sarah Royer had an impressive performance between the pipes, stopping 19 shots while facing 32 shots by the Saints. Siena freshman goalie Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) posted 15 saves while facing 30 shots by the Griffs.
Siena will close out their season on the road against Drexel on April 24 at 3:00 p.m.
