Siena Sweeps MAAC Postseason Awards

March 1, 2001

LOUDONVILLE, NY - For only the third time in league history, one team swept the Player, Rookie and Coach of the Year. The Saints achieved the feat for the second time with 1991 being the first. Gunta Basko won Player of the Year while fellow Latvian Liene Jansone was named the Rookie of the Year. Coach Gina Castelli was named the Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

Basko (Olaine, Latvia/Riga Secondary #3) became the first sophomore ever to be honored as the MAAC Player of the Year. During the regular season, she averaged 16.6 ppg and 10.0 rpg. She led the conference in rebounding and was among the top 25 nationally. She ended up third in scoring and steals. She compiled one of the greatest seasons in school history, finishing among the top three rebounding and top 15 scoring seasons ever.

Jansone (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary #45) was named the Rookie of the Year after winning Rookie of the Week the last five weeks in a row, and six times overall. She led all freshmen in the conference with 13.4 ppg and 9.2 rpg. She also hit 58 percent of her shots, tops in the entire nation among freshmen. She broke the school record for rebounds by a freshman. The Latvian came on strong after the New Year, scoring 18.4 ppg and grabbing 11.9 rpg in the last 11 games of the regular season.

Coach Gina Castelli was voted by her peers as the Coach of the Year for the fourth time, having won the honor in 1991, 1994 and 1998. Castelli led the Saints on a turnaround from last year's disappointing 10-18 campaign. Siena finished the regular season 21-5 and won the regular-season title at 17-1, becoming the first school ever to win 17 MAAC games.

Basko was named to the All-MAAC First-Team, while senior Sacha Baker (Pawtucket, RI/St. Raphael) was named to the Second-Team. She scored 13.8 ppg to go along with 3.2 apg during the regular season. In addition to being the Rookie of the Year, Jansone was named All-MAAC Third-Team.
