Women's Lax Falls Short at Canisius 9-8

April 13, 2002

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior Lisa Barbasch and sophomore Erin Westenfield each scored two goals apiece, while five other Canisius players were each credited with a goal to help lead the Golden Griffins to a 9-8 win over visiting Siena College in MAAC Lacrosse League action Saturday morning at the Demske Sports Complex. The win moves Canisius to 4-4 overall, and 1-2 in the MAAC. The win not only snapped a three-game Canisius losing streak, but it also sets a new school record for most wins in a season, besting last year's three win total. Siena falls to 0-9 on the year, 0-2 in conference.

Barbasch scored the first goal of the game 56 seconds into contest off an assist from fellow senior Becky Scanlon. Siena took an early 2-1 lead thanks to the goal scoring of junior Sarah Estes. Estes scored the Saints' first three goals on her way to collecting four tallies. The Griffs would respond with five straight goals to take a 6-2 lead into the intermission. Westenfield scored the eventual game winner with 7:30 left in the first half off an assist from freshman Jillian Schwartz.

Siena finishes off a weekend road swing to Buffalo by facing Niagara Sunday at noon.
