Four Siena women's basketball players received post-season honors this afternoon as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its All-MAAC teams. Seniors Jolene Johnston, Liene Jansone and Nathalie Marchino, along with freshman Katelyn Dooley, were honored for their play during the season.
An All-Tournament Team selection in 2002-03, Johnston (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) earned All-MAAC First Team distinction this season. The 5-9 forward averaged 13.4 points per game to close out the regular season-good enough for six in the conference. Her 6.1 rebounds per game put her among the top-12 in the league. She has scored in double figures in 20 of 27 games played and has posted five double-doubles on the season. While ranking second on the team in points and rebounds, she leads the squad in steals (47) and lists second in assists (48). Most recently, she poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the Saints past St. Peter's, giving them a share of the MAAC regular-season title and the first seed in the conference tournament.
Jansone (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary #45) has landed on the All-MAAC team for the fourth-straight season. Having already claimed Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman and Player of the Year honors in 2002-03, the 6-2 center was a Third Team selection this season. Before becoming sidelined with a broken left arm, Jansone was averaging a team-high 16.4 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game. She earned MAAC weekly honors this season as Player of the Week (1/19) after averaging a double-double through two games with 19 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 60.9 percent from the floor.
Marchino (Geneva, Switzerland/Dewitt Clinton), also a Third Team selection, averaged 9.8 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game through 27 contests after assuming the point guard position this season. The 5-7 guard ranks first on the team in assists (118) and second in steals (45). She has played a team-high 896 minutes and joins Johnston as one of only two players to have started all 27 games for the Saints this season.
Dooley (Troy, N.Y./Lansingburgh) averaged 7.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game through the regular season. The 5-9 guard was solid from the free throw line, connecting on 84.6 percent of her attempts while also shooting well from the field at 44.5 percent. She knocked down a team second-best 25 three pointers and listed first in three-point shooting percentage (.403) among those players having taken 10 or more treys. She was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times, including a selection this week after averaging 10 points per game through two key Siena victories.
The Saints finished out the regular season 17-10 overall and 13-5 in the MAAC, and will enter the league tournament as the first seed. Siena earned a first and second round bye and will take the court in the semifinal round slated for Saturday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m.
