Final Stats
Freshman Kenny Hasbrouck scored a career high 23 points to lead Siena past Youngstown State 75-67 at Pepsi Arena in front of 5,678 fans on Wednesday night. Siena's starting five scored all 75 points, and the Saints held off a strong second half charge from the Penguins.
"This was a great win for us tonight," head coach Fran McCaffery said following the game. "That was as explosive of a basketball team as we have seen all season. We knew they were going to make a run, and we executed well down the stretch."
The Saints built a 20-point second half lead on two occasions, but Youngstown (3-7) rallied to cut the deficit to 59-55 with 5:15 remaining forcing McCaffery into a timeout.
"I challenged our team at that point, and said we needed to dig in," McCaffery said. "I was happy with the way we responded."
Senior captain Antoine Jordan scored eight of his 18 points after the timeout to lead the resurgence.
Hasbrouck came up with the key play of the game with Siena (5-4) leading 62-55. He reeled in an offensive rebound and dribbled the ball to the 3-point line, turned and connected on a shot that pushed the Saints lead back to 10.
Although Quin Humphrey quickly answered with a three on the other end for Youngstown, the deficit was too much for the Penguins to overcome.
Humphrey finished as one of four YSU players in double figures with 16 points. Dominique Crawford also scored 16 off the bench. Keston Roberts scored 12 points and Derrick Harris added 10.
Siena led 37-23 at halftime after a strong first half by Kojo Mensah. Mensah scored 12 of his 19 points before the break for the Saints and made 8-of-10 attempts from the free throw line.
The Saints went 25-38 from the charity stripe. Youngstown State got to the line just nine times, making six of those attempts. YSU had 24 fouls, Siena was whistled for just 11 in an encouraging season-long trend.
Siena closes 2005 with a 5-4 record. The Saints will play next at Vermont on January 2 at 7 p.m.
