Senior captain Christie Gustafson was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore libero Kathi Kobayashi was named co-Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Burgandy McCurty was named MAAC Rookie of the Week as the Saints tuned up for the MAAC Tournament with two key league wins to end the regular-season.
Gustafson averaged 6.0 kills per game and posted consecutive double-doubles in sweeps of Marist and Iona. She had 14 kills and 10 digs in the win over the Red Foxes and added 22 kills and 10 digs in the Iona victory. Gustafson moved to within three digs of becoming just the third member of the school's 1,000-kill/1,000-dig club. She had five aces in the two matches. On the season, Gustafson leads the team with 3.97 kills per game.
Kobayashi anchored Siena's stout defense, averaging 6.0 digs on the week. She had a match-high 23 digs in the Saints' three-game win over Iona, an average of 7.7 per game. In the Marist win, she posted a team-high 13 digs, an average of 4.3 per game. Kobayashi leads the Saints with 3.7 digs per game this season.
McCurty took home the league's top freshman honor for the fourth time this season. She posted a .510 attack percentage and posted double figure kills in two MAAC wins for the Saints. She had 11 kills in 18 attacks, committing just one error in the Iona win. In the victory over Marist, she killed 10 of her 17 attacks. She chipped in three blocks on the week as well. McCurty leads the Saints with a 3.83 attack percentage. She is averaging 3.3 kills per game.
The Saints return to action Thursday evening in the quarterfinal round of the 2006 MAAC Championships at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Siena, the #2 seed, will play the winner of #7 Saint Peters versus #10 Niagara set to take place at noon on Thursday. The winner advances to the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Friday.
