Fairfield, Conn- The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-6 win over visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League foe Siena College, this afternoon on Alumni Field. The win improves the Stags to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in MAAC play, while the Saints fall to 1-9 and 0-3 in conference action. The loss marks the fifth straight on the road.
The contest was closely contested throughout, with no team having more than a two goal lead, and Siena never leading by more than a single goal. Neither team would score in the final 17:30 of the game. The teams took just 13 shots combined in the second half, seven by Fairfield, who out shot the Saints 23-20 for the game.
The Stags struck first with a goal at 26:14 of the first half, on a free position shot. The Saints answered with goals from freshman Ryan Tierney at 24:20 and sophomore Lauren Ritchie at 23:35 to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. The teams would alternate goals, tying 2-2 (22:22), 3-3 (16:07) and 4-4 (5:09). Fairfield would net the final goal of the first half, for the 5-4 lead, that would not be relinquished.
The Stags wasted little time in the second half, scoring 22 seconds into the period, for a 6-4 advantage. Sophomore Lynn Harkins got the Saints back within one, 6-5, at the 24:00 mark, but the Stags answered back at 22:40. Freshman Lindsey Rosencrans scored the Saints final goal at the 18:55 mark, making it 7-6, leading to Beth Loffredo's insurance goal with 17:31 to play.
Bethany Zimmer allowed eight goals while recording seven saves.
The Saints return to action Saturday, April 8, during Siena Spring Sports Fan Fest in MAAC action against Iona College in a 12 noon contest.
