Iona Upends Siena Women's Lacrosse 13-12

Kelly Hughes scored the game winning goal with 1:11 left as Iona defeated Siena 13-12 in a MAAC game Saturday in Loudonville. The Saints rallied from a 9-4 halftime deficit and tied the game 12-12 on an Amy Schoonmaker goal in the waning moments. After Hughes scored the Saints had a chance to tie with seconds left, but Schoonmaker's shot was denied.

Jaclyn O'Leary, who scored two goals, netted the first score of the game just 20 seconds into the game to put the Gaels on the board. Katie Cavanaugh and Marisa Audley would soon follow and after nine minutes of play, Iona was ahead 3-0.

Lynn Harkins struck first for the Saints with a free position shot in the 17th minute of play. She added an unassisted score moments later following consecutive Iona scores by O'Leary and Cavanaugh. Lauren Ritchie netted the Saints' third goal with 11 minutes left in the half taking an assist from Christian Pampalone. Siena's Lindsey Rosencrans would score unassisted at the 10 minute mark for the Saints' final first half goal.

Leading 5-4, the Gaels scored four more times to take a five-goal lead to the lockerroom. Cavanaugh, O'Leary, Audley and Jillian Beck each scored. Cavanaugh and Audley led the Gaels with three goals a piece. O'Leary scored twice.

The Saints began their rally after halftime. Scoring in the first minute of play, Pamapalone netted the fifth goal for Siena. Schoonmaker followed and freshman Ryan Tierney scored twice to put the Saints within one goal.

The Gaels answered with scored from Audley and Godlewski, pushing their lead to 11-8.

Sophomore's Lauren Ritchie and Niki Burger scored to close the gap to a single goal, 11-10. After a free position shot by Iona's O'Leary, Tierney netted her third goal, and at the 5:30 mark Schoonmaker tied the game 12-12.

After four minutes of scoreless play, the Gales iced their victory with Hughes' game-winner with 1:11 left in the match

The Gaels goaltender Colleen Magri finished the game with 13 saves.

Iona improves to 4-7 overall, 1-2 in the MAAC and Siena drops to 1-10 overall and 0-3 in the MAAC.

Siena returns to action on Sunday against MAAC challenger Manhattan at 12 p.m.
