Poughkeepsie, NY-- The Siena water polo team (6-18-1) split its two matches at Marist College this afternoon. The Saints defeated St. Francis, 7-5 in the morning match, but fell to Villanova, 12-8 in the afternoon contest.
The young Saints battled the Wildcats until Villanova notched three goals to the Saints two in the third quarter to take an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. For Siena, four Saints scored led by freshman Lauren Biehle, who notched three goals, followed by classmate Lauren Garrigan two goals. Sophomore Caitlin Smith added two goals, two assists, and she committed five turnovers. Freshman Erin Clun nabbed her seventh goals of the season. The Wildcats scored four goals to allow Villanova to pull away for the 12-8 win. Between Garrigan and senior Shanna Allen, the Saints were 0-4 in swim-offs.
In Siena's morning match against St. Francis, the Saints were looking to avenge last weeks 10-3 loss to the Terriers. In the first period, the Saints connected on four goals, cruising to a comfortable 4-1 lead heading in to the second period. Saints defense was vital, as they smothered the Terriers offense, only allowing them to score two goals in the second period. The Terriers continued to chip at the Saints lead, holding Siena scoreless in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Saints notched two goals in the fourth period. Five different players ended up scoring for the Saints, led by Smith game winning goal at the 3:51 mark of the first period, she finished with two goals. Allen added two goals; Garrigan, Clune and freshman Lynn Whitmire each chipped in one goal apiece. In the win, Garrigan and Smith combined for six team assists, while Allen had two key blocks.
The Saints are back in action at Villanova to face Iona (2:30 p.m.) and Villanova (5:30 p.m.) in MAAC play.
