Head women's soccer coach Steve Karbowski released the team captains for the 2006 season today. Seniors Lauren Stys and Megan Helf join junior Amy Loughridge as tri-captains.
"Each of these players has demonstrated strong leadership qualities during their time at Siena," Karbowski said. "They have a team first attitude and lead by example on and off the field."
Helf has remained closely involved with the team despite missing the 2005 season with a knee injury. Her dynamic style of play will be a welcomed addition again in 2006. Helf played in 18 games, starting nine times in 2004. She finished tied for second on the team with six points, registering two goals and two assists.
"Megan maturity and leadership has earned her respect from teammates and coaches," Karbowski said.
Stys returns to Siena after spending the spring studying abroad in Italy. Her steadiness and toughness have helped her emerge as a reliable defender for 3 seasons. She was a unanimous choice for captain, valued by her teammates for her selfless, team-first attitude. Stys started 17 of Siena's 19 games last season registering one assists from her defense post.
"Lauren's commitment and pride for Siena College will make her a great senior leader," Karbowski said.
Loughridge becomes the first junior captain since 2001 (Cristina Coloccia and Colleen Smyth). Loughridge was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team and MAAC Second Team as a freshman after tallying four assists as a midfielder. She dished out five assists and had two goals as a sophomore en route to MAAC Second Team honors.
"Amy's tremendous work rate and competitive attitude are a great example for the team," Karbowski said. "She takes her training very serious and will do whatever it takes for the team's success."
The Saints kick off the 2006 season with an August 19 scrimmage at Massachusetts. The Saints open the season at home against Stony Brook on August 25.
