Siena College freshman middle hitter Burgandy McCurty was selected today as a one of 15 Division I freshmen to be honored as a "Rising Star" by The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU). McCurty was named MAAC Rookie of the Year after setting a school record with a MAAC-leading .386 attack percentage.
McCurty (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) averaged 3.27 kills per game as a freshman for the Saints. She was named MAAC Rookie of the Week three times and MAAC Player of the week once.
Nebraska's Rachel Holloway was named the 2006 CVU.com Freshman of the Year.
CVU also selected 13 other freshmen (for a total of 15) as its Rising Stars. According to the CVU website (www.cvu.com) the freshmen were selected "not only because they excelled this season, but because they are expected to do great things in the future."
