Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena women's water polo team took down Mercyhurst 8-6 in an overtime thriller this afternoon in Erie, Pa. Freshman utility player Christina Allison the game winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give the Saints their first victory of the season.
Mercyhurst held a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter, however, the Saints battled back in the second taking a 4-3 edge into halftime. The Lakers evened the game at 5-5 outscoring the Saints 2-1 in the third period. Each squad posted a goal apiece in the final quarter to force a overtime session.
In overtime, the Saints defense clamped down on Mercyhurst's offensive attack holding them scoreless. Then with 49 seconds remaining in the first overtime session, Allison blasted a shot past the Mercyhurst goalkeeper which proved to be the game winner.
Sophomore center Lauren Biehle led the Saints scoring attack posting three goals on the afternoon. Lauren Garrigan, a preseason All-MAAC selection, delivered two goals and two assists in the winning effort.
Gina Guevara, Caitlin Smith and Allison rounded out the Saints scoring posting a goal apiece.
Junior goaltender Kaedy Graves tied her own program record with 16 saves on the afternoon. Graves set the record on April 2, 2005 when she tallied 16 saves against Mercyhurst at the inaugural Siena Invitational.
With the victory, Siena improves to 1-0 on the season. The Saints return to the water tomorrow when they take on Gannon in an exhibition match at 11 a.m.
