LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore utility Lauren Garrigan (Kailua, Hawaii/Kamehameha) tallied the game winning goal with 5:12 remaining in the first quarter to propel the Siena women's water polo team past Utica 19-4 this afternoon in Loudonville. Caitlin Smith (Miami Springs, Fla./Miami Springs), set a season record tallying six assists on the afternoon. Smith also managed nine points which ties the Saints 2007 season record.
"We started to execute our offense really well in the second quarter after some initial home opener jitters," said head coach Rob Swingle. "It is always nice to get a win at home."
Utica jumped to an early lead connecting on an outside shot on their very first possession to take a 1-0 advantage. However, minutes later Smith evened the game when she blasted a shot past the Utica goaltender at the six minute mark. Soon thereafter, Garrigan managed to score a goal which proved to be the game winner with 5:12 left in the first quarter.
Siena goaltenders Kaedy Graves (Lake Worth, Fla./Lake Worth Community) and Lisa Reilly (Whittier, Calif./California High School) helped anchored the Utica defensive unit combining for six saves and just four goals on the afternoon. Anne LaFex (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), Christina Allison (Chula Vista, Calif./Otay Ranch) and Erin Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) managed three steals apiece in the contest.
With the victory, the Saints are riding a six game winning streak. The squad returns to action on Friday at Utica. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
