LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's water polo team notched eight goals in the first quarter and then cruised to a 19-1 victory at Utica. Lauren Garrigan (Kailua, Hawaii/Kamehameha), a sophomore utility, tallied a game-high five goals to lead the Saints to their seventh straight win. Junior center Caitlin Smith (Miami Springs, Fla./Miami Springs) registered the game winner with 6:44 remaining in the first period.
"I am very happy with how well we moved off the ball to create opportunities," head coach Rob Swingle explained. "Any time you can draw 12 ejections and a penalty shot in a game is encouraging."
The Saints went 6-for-12 in man-advantage situations on the evening. At the 4:52 mark in the third quarter, freshman utility Gina Guevara (Weston Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) drew a penalty shot which Anne LaFex (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) converted on to extend the Saints lead. LaFex finished with two goals and an assist in the contest.
Siena senior Jeannette Ogren (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) helped anchor the Saints defensive effort as she recorded a team high five steals. Ogren also registered a goal and an assist.
Kaedy Graves (Lake Worth, Fla./Lake Worth Community), a junior goaltender, was dominant in net posting eight saves and allowing just one goal over the course of the contest.
With the victory, Siena improves to 12-4 overall. The Saints return to action on Saturday when the face-off with Iona at the third annual Siena Invitational. Game time is set for noon.
