Loudonville, N.Y. - Junior center Caitlin Smith (Miami Springs, Fla./Miami Springs) connected on a penalty shot with just 24 seconds remaining to send the Saints off with a 6-5 victory over Gannon this afternoon at the Siena Invitational. Lauren Garrigan (Kailua, Hawaii/Kamehameha) and Smith each tallied a team-high two goals on the afternoon.
The Saints jumped out to a 2-1 advantage by the end of the first period thanks to goals from Jeannette Ogren (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Smith. Gannon battled back in the second quarter and notched a goal at the 4:42 mark to even the game at 2-2 as they entered the half.
Siena controlled the third quarter managing two unanswered goals courtesy of Anne LaFex (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and Garrigan. This proved to be the Saints largest lead of the contest.
Gannon made a late fourth quarter comeback and eventually evened the game at 4-4, however, the Saints responded quickly as Garrigan scored her second goal of the contest to go up 5-4. Soon thereafter, Brenna Pease notched a goal for Gannon to even the contest once more.
Then with just 24 seconds remaining, Smith blasted a penalty shot into the back of the net to give the Saints their 13th victory of the season. Smith finished the afternoon with five goals over two contests.
The Saints went 1-1 on the afternoon and improve to 13-5 overall. Siena returns to action tomorrow for day two of the third annual Siena Invitational. Game time will be announced following tonight's contest between Gannon and Iona which is set for 6:30 p.m.
