Saints Remain Perfect in League Play

April 1, 2007

Final Stats

Loudonville, N.Y. - Sophomore attacker Ryan Tierney (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) exploded for five goals and two assists lifting the Saints to a 12-8 victory over Canisius in Loudonville. Lindsay Rosecrans, a sophomore midfielder, also delivered four points in the winning effort. With the victory, Siena (3-6, 2-0) remains perfect in league play and is currently harboring a two game winning streak. Senior co-captain Christina Pampalone (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) was honored in a pre-game ceremony for recently becoming the program's all-time leading goal scorer.

"This was a great win for our team today," said head coach Jake McHerron. "We stepped up when we needed to and played excellent on both ends of the field."

The game proved to be a defensive battle early on as both teams remained scoreless over the first 14 minutes of action. Soon thereafter, Rosecrans put an end to this drought notching three consecutive goals in just less than four and a half minutes. Rosecrans capped off her scoring clinic when she sent one past the Canisius goalkeeper thanks in part to a phenomenal feed from Tierney.

The Saints defense was dominant in the first period. Junior goalkeeper Heather Ely (Elbridge, N.Y./Jordan Elbridge) anchored the defensive unit holding Canisius to just one goal after posting seven saves. Ely finished with 10 saves in the contest.

Siena also received a stellar performance from their starting defensive unit which includes Corey Fink (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), Niki Burger (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa), Sarah Elliott (Shoreview, Minn./Totino-Grace), Leah Ciaccio (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Emily Winslow (Webster, N.Y./Webster Shroeder).

Tierney would post her first goal at the 6:43 mark which guided Siena into the half holding 4-1 advantage.

The Golden Griffins battled their way back into the contest midway through the second half. Attackers Lauren Walsh and Brittany Farrugia put up back-to-back goals which cut the Siena lead to 6-5 with 13:48 to go.

Tierney responded just 29 seconds later when she connected on a free position shot to extend the lead. However, the persistent Golden Griffs wouldn't go away quietly and used a Whitney Card score to cut the deficit down to 7-6.

This would be the closest Canisius would come to taking the lead as Siena posted four of the next five goals to gain a comfortable advantage. Tierney was responsible for two of the scores, while Alexandra Kain (Williston Park, N.Y./Mineola) and Lynn Harkins (Bellmore, N.Y./Holy Trinity) recorded one apiece. Pampalone and Tierney both followed through with a goal down the stretch to secure the victory.

Siena will return to action on Thursday at LeMoyne to start their final road stretch of the season. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised live on Time Warner Cable channel 3. The contest will also be rebroadcast at 7:30 p.m. later that night, and then on April 6 at 7 p.m.
