LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Siena women's water polo team split two MAAC contests this afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Saints dropped their first contest 12-11 to Villanova, however, the squad rebounded later in the evening with a thrilling 8-7 victory over St. Francis.
Senior attacker Anne LaFex (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) and sophomore utility Lauren Garrigan (Kailua, Hawaii/Kamehameha) tallied three goals apiece in the losing effort to league rival Villanova. Siena (12-8, 1-3) let a 10-8 advantage at the conclusion of the third quarter slip away.
Villanova outscored the Saints 4-1 in the final period and escaped with a 12-11 victory. Sophomore center Lauren Biehle (Visalia, Calif./Golden West) posted two goals, while Caitlin Smith (Miami Springs, Fla./Miami Springs) also managed two of her own.
Kaedy Graves (Lake Worth, Fla./Lake Worth Community) and Lisa Reilly (Whittier, Calif./California High School) shared time in goal and combined for 12 saves in the contest.
St. Francis took Siena to the wire in it's second game. With five seconds remaining, Garrigan connected on a five meter shot to send the Saints off with an 8-7 victory marking the team's first league win of the season.
Biehle topped all scorers with four goals, and Smith complemented her performance well with three scores. Reilly overwhelmed St. Francis with 10 saves in the contest. Garrigan managed an impressive seven steals over the course of the game.
The Saints return to action tomorrow morning versus Marist at 9 a.m. Siena rounds out it's home portion of the schedule at 1:30 p.m. against Wagner. Prior to the contest, Siena will honor it's graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
