Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory over non-conference rival Holy Cross (2-3-0) this afternoon in Loudonville. Freshman midfielder Cara Riley connected on the game winning goal in the 20th minute helping Siena (2-4-0) snap a two game losing streak.
Riley sparked the Saints offensive attack at the 19: 38 mark when she collected a loose ball in front of the cage and sent it into the back of the net giving Siena a one goal advantage. The score marked Riley's first of her collegiate career.
With 3:15 remaining in the half, freshman forward Tabitha Tice extended the Saints lead to 2-0 when she also drained her first career goal. Tice gathered a loose ball in the center of the box and placed it past diving Crusaders goalkeeper Jessica Stone.
The Saints bombarded Holy Cross with 14 shots in the second half and outshot the Crusaders 26-13 over the course of the game.
At the 52:05 mark, senior forward Susie Blaisdell joined in on the scoring jamboree. Blaisdell settled a corner kick sent in by freshman Susan Schneck and put it past the charging Stone.
Junior midfielder Stephanie DiMari put the game out of reach in the 84th minute when she notched her first goal of the season. Alyssa Thayer got the Saints moving up field when she delivered a lead pass to Deonna Gould. Gould pushed the ball to DiMari on the right side who buried a shot into the left corner.
The Saints defense was superb throughout the contest holding Holy Cross scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Patti Carroll earned her first shutout of the season as she compiled five saves on the afternoon.
With the victory, the Saints improve to 2-4-0 overall. Siena returns to action on Wednesday when they square off with Vermont on Siena Field. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
