ALBANY, N.Y. - Junior Sarah Fullmer and senior Heather Stec combined for 30 points but fell to Rhode Island 66-60 Monday evening at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. URI's Sierra Cooper led all scorers with 23 points as the Rams came from behind to pull out the win.
Heather Stec led the Saints (0-2) early, scoring five points, grabbing two boards and adding an assist in the first four minutes of the game. URI pressed Siena, but couldn't stop the guards from moving the ball up the court. Six minutes in, the Rams abandoned the press. Sarah Fullmer scored 10 points on 5-6 shooting from the field and helped put the Saints in front 35-31 at the half.
URI (1-1) outscored the Saints 13-4 to open the second half as Crystal Bellinger scored 10 straight during that run. Siena fought back with junior guard Merrick Volpe providing a spark off the bench. She scored all nine of her points in the second half.
With 2:27 on the clock, Allie Lindemann hit her first 3-pointer of the game to bring the Saints within two points. After a timeout, Brittany Wilwohl stole the ball in URI's backcourt and passed to Stec who was fouled. Stec went to the line with a chance to tie the game, but only hit one of her two free throws. URI's upperclassmen took over in the last two minutes. Lindsay Harris scored on a layup and Sierra Cooper hit a jumper to put the Rams up by five.
Cooper and Fullmer each set career highs in points with 23 and 17 respectively. Stec finished with 13 points and 17 rebounds, her second double-double in as many games this season.
The Saints return to action Thursday evening at Boston University at 7 p.m.
