Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena women's lacrosse team recorded their first victory of the year defeating visiting Central Connecticut State University 19-8 this afternoon at snowy Siena Turf Field. Freshman attack Caitlin Mikel tallied a hat trick and added four assists, while teammate Courtney Highsmith also added three scores for the Saints who improved to 1-1 on the season.
"I thought this was a great win for our team today," noted head coach Jake McHerron. "To come out of the gates strong early and be able to build up a big lead really aided our efforts."
After Alexandra Kain secured Siena an early 1-0 lead just three minutes in, CCSU responded with a pair of quick scores to take their first and only lead of the game at 2-1 with 23:04 remaining in the first half.
With the score tied at three at the 15 minute mark, the Green and Gold offense took control, rattling off six unanswered goals over the next eight minutes for a commanding 9-3 lead. Entering intermission, Siena built their cushion to 12-5.
As soon as the whistle blew for the start of the second half, Siena struck with three quick goals in the first four minutes to put the game away.
Mikel led all scorers with a stellar seven point performance and found the back of the net on three of her four shot attempts.
"For Caitlin to come in as a freshman and have the game she did today in just her second game speaks volumes," added McHerron. "She showed today what she can do and has a lot to look forward to in the future."
Other notable performances included Catherine Quinlan, Lynn Harkins, Erin Montgomery, Erin Hepper and Kain who all tallied two goal performances. Kain also won 13 of the Saints 19 draw controls.
Stephanie John led all Blue Devils scorers with three goals and three assists along with four ground balls.
The Saints held a commanding edge in shots (33-22), ground balls (40-27) and draw controls (19-10) in a dominating performance.
Siena will return to action on Monday afternoon when they host cross-town rival UAlbany. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. from Siena Turf Field.
