Loudonville, N.Y. - Iona senior midfielder Jaclyn O'Leary scored six goals to match the entire Siena women's lacrosse team which fell in their MAAC home opener to the Gaels by a score of 13-6 this afternoon at Siena Turf Field. Lindsey Rosecrans and Alexandra Kain each tallied a pair of goals for the Saints who dropped to 1-4 at home this season.
Both squads battled to a scoreless draw for nearly 11 minutes to begin the game before the offense was kick started. Jaclyn O'Leary, Rachel O'Leary and Christie Godlewski combined to score three goals in a 1:08 span to secure Iona (6-8, 2-2) a 3-0 advantage at the 18:17 mark.
The Saints (3-8, 1-2) responded with the next two tallies from Rosecrans and Kain to pull within 3-2 at the 14:33 mark, but never got closer than a goal the rest of the way.
Iona reeled off four straight goals in response and despite a Lynn Harkins score just 22 seconds before halftime, Siena trailed 7-3 entering intermission.
The Green and Gold cut the deficit to 8-6 with 14:24 remaining in the second half on Ryan Tierney's 12th goal of the season, but the Gaels scored six unanswered goals to conclude the game and run away with the win.
Iona held a 29-19 edge in shots including 18-10 in the second half. Liz Peters made 11 stops in goal for Siena, while teammate Courtney Highsmith tied her for the team lead with four groundballs.
Jaclyn O'Leary led all scorers with her six goals and also secured three groundballs. Godlewski finished with a hat trick, while Jillian Beck accounted for the Gaels other lone multiple goal scorer with two.
The Saints return to action Sunday afternoon for their final home game of the season against Manhattan. Game time is slated for 12 noon as the Saints will celebrate their annual senior day. At approximately 11:45 a.m. the team will honor graduating seniors Lynn Harkins, Katie Ostrye, Emily Winslow and Kathryn Marcantonio in a pregame ceremony.
