Garrigan, Crosby Power Siena Water Polo to MAAC Split

April 12, 2008

Loudonville, N.Y. - The Siena water polo team split a pair of conference contests today, drubbing host Villanova 17-7 before being edged in double overtime by Iona 19-18 in Philadelphia, Pa. Lauren Garrigan and Jackie Crosby paced the Siena offense, combining for 21 goals in the two games. The split moved the Saints to 9-16 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

In the opening game of the morning, the Green and Gold earned their second victory of the season over the Wildcats. The Saints topped Villanova earlier this season by a 12-8 margin at the Siena Invite.

Crosby paced the Saints with six goals, while Caitlin Smith scored a season-high four and Garrigan added three. Lauren Biehle, Camille Norman and reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Devan Ragg accounted for the other Siena goals.

Garrigan also tallied three assists for a total of six points, while Ragg contributed three assists as well and drew four ejections. Lisa Reilly posted 13 saves in goal.

In the nightcap, Siena fell to the Gaels for the third time in three meetings this season and second time in double overtime. The Saints harbored a 10-7 lead at the midway point, but Iona tallied seven goals in the third during their comeback attempt to force the overtime periods.

Garrigan led all goal scorers with seven, four of which came in 6-on-5 situations. Crosby added five goals and three assists for an eight point performance, while Biehle contributed four goals and Gina Guevara two.

In another solid all-around game, Crosby added three steals and drew four ejections. Norman recorded a career-high with five assists, while Reilly added 12 more stops between the pipes.

The Saints return to action for the next weekend of MAAC play set to get underway Saturday in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Green and Gold will battle Wagner and Marist in a pair of games set to begin at 1 p.m.
