Final Stats
Loudonville, N.Y. - UAlbany received four goals from Corey Small and three more from reserve Nate Sullivan en route to a 13-6 victory over the Siena men's lacrosse team this evening under the lights at John Fallon Field in Albany. Junior midfielder Scott Montgomery had another banner game in a losing effort for the Saints, tallying 15 groundballs, while winning 15 of 21 face-off attempts.
Siena (6-4) took the early advantage on a Mike Lashomb goal with 8:43 remaining in the first. But the high-powered Great Danes (3-5) offense reeled off five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead just minutes into the second period.
Bryan Hale quickly responded to pull the Green and Gold within 5-2, but that would be as close as the Saints would get as Small and Sullivan added tallies before the end of the half to secure UAlbany a 7-2 advantage entering intermission.
The Great Danes built there lead to 12-3 at the end of the third, before Siena pulled closer scoring three of the final four goals to cut into the final margin.
Mahopac, N.Y. natives Matt Girsh and Matt Leithead led the offense, each posting a pair of goals for the Saints who dropped their second straight game and fell for the sixth time in six all-time Division I meetings against their cross-town rival.
UAlbany received a balanced offensive attack, featuring seven different goal scorers and had seven of their 13 goals come from their reserves in picking up their third straight victory after beginning the year at 0-5.
The Great Danes harbored a slim 35-28 edge in shots and forced the Saints into 29 turnovers. Meanwhile, the Saints held a 38-32 advantage in groundballs thanks in large part to Montgomery's solid performance, which included Siena face-off wins in 15 of their 22 attempts. Montgomery had entered the contest fresh off moving into the top-10 in Division I in groundballs per game and face-off win percentage.
The Saints look to put an end to their mini two game slide when they return to action on Saturday in search of their first conference win of 2008 against Wagner. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Staten Island.
