Loudonville, N.Y. - Playing in their third straight must-win situation in order to advance to their second consecutive MAAC Tournament, the Siena men's lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Mary's 12-7 this afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md. to secure their third straight win. However, Siena did not receive the help it needed as Manhattan defeated VMI in double overtime, ending the Saints tournament aspirations.
Siena (10-6, 4-4) dominated the opening half racing out to a 4-0 lead entering intermission on the strength of a pair of goals in each of the first two periods. The Saints were bolstered by four different goal scorers in the opening frame, receiving tallies off the sticks of Shaun Dunn, Ryan Duggan, Chris Zarins and Matt Girsh.
The Mount (2-11, 2-6) quickly responded in the second half and made it a game following a pair of quick Dan Mohr goals in the first two and a half minutes to cut the Saints' lead in half, 4-2.
The Green and Gold answered back scoring seven of the next nine goals and never led by less than three for the remainder of the game as Siena secured their third straight win over Mount St. Mary's after The Mount had won the first 11 games in the all-time series.
Siena received an all-around balanced scoring attack in which five players recorded three points. Duggan led the way with a hat trick, while Zarins and Bryan Hale each added a pair of goals.
Faceoff specialist Scott Montogomery recorded his first goal of the season while also winning 11 draws and scooping a game-high eight groundballs.
Mohr and teammate Brendan Harrison accounted for all of the Mount's scoring output, finishing with four and three goals respectively.
With the win, Siena finished 10-6 overall for the second straight year giving the Saints their first back-to-back winning seasons since the program posted five consecutive winning years from 1979-83.
After a 1-4 start to conference competition in which each of the four losses came by a single goal including two in overtime, Siena won three straight to conclude the year at an even .500 in the MAAC at 4-4. The Saints tied both VMI and Saint Joseph's for the fourth best record in the conference, however VMI defeated both Siena and Saint Joseph's during the regular season to win the tiebreaker and garner the fourth and final playoff spot in next weekend's MAAC Tournament in Loudonville.
